Portrait of an Unknown Woman Painting by Ivan Kramskoi

Anna Karenina (Анна Каренина)

I have started reading Anna Karenina (Анна Каренина), which will be my first book by Leo Tolstoy (Лев Толстой).

It’s not my first experience of Tolstoy’s work though. I have listened to the opera War and Peace (Op. 91) (Война и мир) by Sergei Prokofiev (Сергей Прокофьев), which is based on another massive work of his.

My wife and I also watched the 2017 series “Anna Karenina: Vronsky’s Story” directed by Karen Shakhnazarov (Каре́н Шахназа́ров), which is told from the perspective of Vronksy. I know that the series took many creative divergences from the novel but we appreciated it in its own right.

I have also watched the eponymous ballet film from 1974 featuring Maya Plisetskaya (Майя Плисецкая) with score composed by Rodion Shchedrin (Родион Щедрин) – a prolific Soviet Russian composer.
